company name business or blog

Naming your Business or Blog is not easy if you decide to forgo using your own name in favour of something more impersonal. Only you can decide the best name & logo for your business or Blog, see a great example of how Cloodjo (the site of product reviews) did it.. Here are some naming tips to guide you in the name selection process.

Go for something easy to pronounce

Unusual names can present language and communication barriers between you and your clients. If your name is very long, either incorporate a nickname into your business name or use a different name altogether. You don’t want your clients to be tongue-tied when they pronounce your business name in person or on the phone.

Choose something professional

Whether you want a formal or informal name, your business must sound professional. You don’t want to use a cheesy name like “Sweet Kisses” if you’re a freelance mystery novelist for instance.

Select a name that can encompass many different areas

If you’re selling cakes and plan to add hot dishes to your menu later on, a name like “Bunny Cakes” will sound limiting later on. Creating a company name serves as an umbrella if you plan to diversify later on. This is especially true if you plan to sell your products and hire employees later on.

Don’t settle for bad names

Don’t use a name that doesn’t feel right for you. If you hate the name, your clients will hate it too. No one respects businesses with bad names.

Know the naming customs in your industry

If you write for a living, you might find lots of freelance writers adding their surname with “Communications,” such as “Green Communications.” Photographers might give themselves names like “Cruz Photography.” Choose a name that reflects your industry standards.

Brainstorm for names

Brainstorm

Use your free time to come up with name combinations. When you feel stuck, ask help from your family, friends, colleagues, and most importantly, your clients. It’s your clients who will use your products or services, so they might as well contribute to the business naming.

If your business name stinks, drop it

Let’s say you come up with a name you find cool. But your clients hate your new business name. You may hate throwing away the new business paraphernalia that you have just printed. You may have to redesign the logo that you have worked so hard on. You may have to adjust your website layout to accommodate the new changes. You may even have to deactivate your current toll free number(s) and get new ones. But if no one likes your business name, it’s time to let them go and think of a new name. The longer your bad name stays, the worse your business will become.

If you plan to ask your clients to help you come up with a different business name, offer them a reward of their liking, like their favorite product from your line of coffee drinks, a gift check to a restaurant, or a discount on your next collaboration. Remember to thank all clients who participated in the name brainstorming. And if you use the name recommended by a client, acknowledge him/her by declaring him/her as the winner of your name game challenge on your website or blog.
